Elizabeth Barrett Browning (née Moulton-Barrett; 6 March – 29 June ) was an English poet of the Victorian era, popular in Britain and the United States during her lifetime.
Born in County Durham, the eldest of 12 children, Elizabeth Barrett wrote poetry from the age of eleven. Her mother's collection of her poems forms one of the largest extant collections of juvenilia by any English writer. Elizabeth Barrett Browning&#;s life reads like the kind of mids Hollywood melodrama that it eventually was. Born in to Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett and Mary Graham-Clarke, Elizabeth Barrett was the oldest of 12 children, 11 of whom survived to adulthood. The Barretts were a wealthy part-Creole family whose Jamaican sugar plantations had sustained the family for centuries. However, Edward Barrett chose to raise his family in England, perhaps to distance them from the family&#;s source of wealth &#; plantations run by slave labor.
