Dear Artist,
While taking a turn in the garden yesterday, I discovered the tiny, pricked egg of a song sparrow in the grass. Too small to have been made by the chick, the pinhole must have come from another, predator bird in search of a smoothie. “Hopefully his siblings had success,” said a friend, when I sent her the image. With all of us in our individual rooms, the now all-day polyphony of happy birds in the garden tells me she’s right.

Chiura Obata papers were digitized in , and total 3, images. Chiura Obata () was a Japanese-American artist and educator. Born Zoroku Sato in Okayama prefecture in Japan, in he immigrated to the United States. In , he began teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, but was forced to relocate to Tanforan detention center with his family in as a result of Executive Order There, he and his fellow artists established a successful art school with over students. After the Obatas were moved to Topaz War Relocation Center, Obata founded the Topaz Art School there. Released in for his own safety in the wake of controversy and an attack, he moved with his family to St. Louis, Missouri for a time. In he was reinstated at Berkeley, and continued to exhibit his work.
