Richard Gerard Valeriani was born in Camden, New Jersey on August 29, He received a bachelor's degree from Yale University in and master's degrees from the University of Pavia in Italy and the University of Barcelona. After being drafted, he served as an Army translator in Germany. After he was discharged, he joined The Associated Press as a reporter and worked there for almost three years. NBC hired him away from The Associated Press while he was covering the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. He went on to become a correspondent for NBC Nightly News and, for a few years in the s, a co-anchor of Today from Washington. He covered the White House at some point during every administration from John F. Kennedy's to George H. W. Bush's. He also had stints covering the State Department and the Pentagon. Born ()August 29, Died June 18, () (aged&#;85) Occupation Journalist Employer NBC News Richard Valeriani (August 29, – June 18, )[1] was an American journalist who was a White House correspondent and diplomatic correspondent with NBC News in the s and s. He previously covered the Civil Rights Movement for the network and was seriously injured when hit in the head with an ax handle at a demonstration in Marion, Alabama, in [2] in which Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot and killed by Alabama State Trooper James Bonard Fowler.[3]
He spoke five languages and began his career in the s covering the Bay of Pigs in Cuba.[4] However, his seemingly most important works were in the Civil Rights Movement of the s. He reported on the important happenings at Selma and Marion Alabama, along with numerous other civil rights happenings.
