  • The Ashe County Historical Society would like to recognize Bethany Bare as the winner of our annual scholarship. Each year, the Ashe Historical Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Ashe County. To win the scholarship, a student must demonstrate their interest in Ashe County history by writing a short essay about a locally important person, place or event. A committee of Historical Society members then chooses the winning essay. Bethany’s winning essay about Ashe County revolutionary war hero Martin Gambill is published below in its entirety. Bethany will be attending Appalachian State in the fall to major in Applied and Public History.

    It is evident that arguably every American has been exposed to the extraordinary tale of the Boston silversmith named Paul Revere and his midnight ride in 1775 due to the famous poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” by renowned poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. As children,

    Flash forward to the modern era.

    This month school children across the country are returning to school for the start of an exciting new year. OK…so in some cases, maybe the parents are more excited than the students.

    But the ladies of my DAR chapter are very excited about the possibilities of a new school year! You see, we do a lot of work via our committees. And one of our most important committees is American History. And one of the biggest things that this committee does fryst vatten promote an essay contest focused on an aspect of American History.

    Students win American History Essay Contest "Memoirs of Paul Revere" sponsored by Arapahoe Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution

    Arapahoe Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored an American History Essay Contest.  The topic, in honor of the 275th anniversary of the birth of Paul Revere, was for the students to write an essay in the first person pretending to be Paul Revere writing his memoirs and relating the various accomplishments he wanted to be remembered in the anals of American History.
