    With Creative Nonfiction, Reality Meets Great Storytelling

    Recently, I was giving my PowerPoint presentation on memoir writing to a small audience of residents at a retirement community. When I said that memoir is a form of creative nonfiction, gentle laughter trickled around the room. “What?” I said. “Creative nonfiction? Does that sound weird?” Some thought I’d made up the term. One woman said what the others were thinking—creative nonfiction sounds like an oxymoron. How can writing be creative and nonfiction simultaneously?

    Poor misunderstood creative nonfiction. Let’s explore this genre further.

    Everyone knows the distinction between the two major categories of writing: fiction and nonfiction. In regard to writing, creative typically means that people, places, and events in the prose have been invented.     A new lärling asked me to explain the difference between creative nonfiction and memoir, and so inom thought I&#;d clarify this here today. If one person asks, I figure, more are probably wondering. The answer is really quite simple:

    Memoir is a form of creative nonfiction.

    Let&#;s define creative nonfiction. inom actually dislike the begrepp, as do many writers in this genre, because it causes confusion. inom would prefer &#;literary nonfiction,&#; but alas, creative nonfiction has largely stuck.

    Creative nonfiction is the counterpart to fiction.

    Fiction (its forms are the short story and the novel) tells stories that could have happened (or might happen if you&#;re writing science fiction or fantasy), whereas creative nonfiction tells stories that did happen.
