When we last left Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i, her mom, Princess Likelike, had died at the young age of Her uncle, King Kalākaua, faced a growing threat from white settlers in Hawai‘i, who banded together to create a new political party called the Independents. Two of the most prominent members of that party were Lorrin Thurston and Sanford Dole – we’ll hear more about them later. At this point, the king was walking a tightrope, trying to balance the needs of native Hawaiians with the greed of the sugar planters, who felt they should have more control over Hawai‘i’s economy and politics.
