    Caldecott Medalist Ed Young is the illustrator of over books for children, many of which he has also written. He found inspiration for his work in the philosophy of Chinese painting.

    “A Chinese painting is often accompanied by words,” explains Young. “They are complementary. There are things that words do that pictures never can, and likewise, there are images that words can never describe.”

    Born in Tientsin, China, Ed Young grew up in Shanghai and later moved to Hong Kong. As a young man, he came to the United States on a student visa to study architecture but turned instead to his love of art.

    Young began his career as a commercial artist in advertising and found himself looking for something more expansive, expressive, and timeless. He discovered all this, and more, in children’s books.

    Ed Tse-chun Young (Chinese: 杨志成; pinyin: Yáng Zhìchéng; November 28, – September 29, ) was a Chinese-born American illustrator and writer of children's picture books and tai chi instructor. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Caldecott Medal and Lifetime Achievement awards for his contributions as a children's illustrator.

    Ed Young was born on November 28, , in Tianjin, China. When he was three years old, he and his family moved to Shanghai. From an early age, Ed loved to create stories and draw sketches.

    In , Young came to the U.S. to study architecture. He grew more interested in art and switched his major. Young's first job was with a New York advertising agency where he spent his lunch breaks sketching animals at the Central Park Zoo. He died at his home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York on September 29, , at the age of [1][2]

    Mr. ung has been illustrating children's books for more than twenty years and has won many awards. He received the Caldecott Medal for his book Lon Po Po, and his much-lauded collaboration with anthologist Nancy Larrick, Cats Are Cats, was named one of the Ten Best Illustrated Books of bygd The New York Times.

    Mr. Young studied at the University of Illinois, the Art Center of Los Angeles, and Pratt Institute in New York City. He and his family live in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
