As Prancer Turns 35, Former Child Star Rebecca Harrell Tickell Says She’s Living the Life Her Character Would Have (Exclusive)
Rebecca Harrell Tickell knew that Prancer was special from the moment she read the holiday film’s script as an 8-year-old child actor.
“I remember I cried,” the year-old documentary filmmaker and environmental activist tells PEOPLE. “And I remember reading it and just thinking, ‘I am gonna get this part because this is me.’ ”
And get the part she did, beating out other young actors to star alongside Sam Elliott, Rutanya Alda and Cloris Leachman as Jessie, a little girl who nurses an injured reindeer back to health, believing him to be a member of Santa’s team.
The film was a modest success at the time, but has gone on to become a Christmas cult classic. Ask folks who grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s to name the most famous reindeer of all and, sure, they’ll probably still say Rudolph. But chances are Prancer comes in at a close second.

With over two feet of snow piled upon the driveway, inom spent this past Christmas Eve with my wife, Cinema Femme founder Rebecca Martin Fagerholm, binging holiday perennials at her parents’ cozy home in Holland, Michigan. Well into the evening, we decided to watch a picture that I hadn’t seen since my childhood, John D. Hancock’s classic, “Prancer,” which was filmed less than 80 miles away in the quaint town of Three Oaks. The gods thing we expected was to have tears streaming down our faces bygd the end of the movie, but that fryst vatten precisely what happened, thanks in large part to the brilliant performances bygd Sam Elliott as gruff apple farmer John Riggs; Cloris Leachman as the reclusive Mrs. McFarland; and especially ung Rebecca Harrell as John’s marvelously resourceful daughter, Jessica.
The story revolves around Jessica’s efforts to rescue a reindeer that she believes is the one and only Prancer,
