In Third Rail's 'Beauty Queen of Leenane,' triumph emerges from harsh reality (review)
In Leenane, in the Connemara region of Ireland, silver strands of rain fall against a black sky. Later, winds will howl and dogs will bark into an empty night. The Beauty Queen of Leenane completes Third Rail’s staging of Martin McDonagh’s Leenane Trilogy, following The Lonesome West and A Skull in Connemara. Maureen Folan is living in her tiny cottage in the village of Leenane, caring for her aging mother, Mag, a woman of many demands and minimal charms. She aches to leave her life of tedium, not to mention her manipulative mother, and opportunity knocks with the appearance of Pato Dooley. So begins a darkly hilarious series of events, leading to a stunning and surprising climax that only Martin McDonagh could have conceived.
Reviews
