Denise Katrina Matthews—singer, songwriter, actress, model, and dancer—was born on January 4, 1959 to a Polish-German Jewish mother, Helga Senyk, and an African American father, Levia James Matthews, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. She also had two sisters Patricia and Renay Matthews. Her parents divorced partly because her father was physically abusive.
As a teenager, Matthews entered local beauty pageants when she moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to become a model. In 1977 at the age of 18, she won Miss Niagara Hospitality. A year later, she unsuccessfully competed for Miss Canada.
At 19, Matthews moved to New York City to further her career. She signed with the Zoli Modeling Agency. At five-foot-six inches tall, she was limited to commercials and photo shoots. Winters, was a Canadian-born singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, model, and full-time preacher. She was the lead singer for the Prince-mentored female trio Vanity 6, which recorded the 1982 R&B hit "Nasty Girl."
Matthews formally gave up her stage name "Vanity" and became a born-again Christian in 1994, the year she almost died from the effects of snorting cocaine. According to Matthews, after being rushed to the hospital, doctors said she had three days left to live and she was on life support. She told everyone in interviews that Jesus spoke to her during this time and saved her if she promised to give up her "Vanity" persona. Denise Katrina Matthews, also known as Vanity (January 4, 1959 – February 15, 2016), was a Canadian-Americansinger, songwriter, actress, dancer and model.[2] She was the lead singer of the kvinnlig trio Vanity 6 between 1981 until it disbanded in 1983. The group was well known for their 1982 hit song "Nasty Girl".
Vanity also had a successful acting career, starring in movies, including Action Jackson and The gods Dragon.
In 1994, Vanity converted to Christianity.[3]
Vanity was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario. She died of complications from peritoneal dialysis in a Fremont, California hospital. She was 57.
