Romanian-born artist
Mircea Cantor (born 1977) is a Romanian-born artist who follows in the tradition of French artist Marcel Duchamp in that he employs readymade objects.[1] Cantor's choice of media is diverse, in that he has employed video, animation, sculpture, drawing, painting, and Installation art in his work.[2]
Cantor's 2005 video work, "Deeparture", which was on view in the contemporary galleries at The Museum of Modern Art, features a deer and a wolf together in a pristine white box environment. Cantor's work is included in The Museum of Modern Art,[3] the Walker Art Center,[4]The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, The Israel Museum, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Abteiberg Museum, Magasin 3, as well as in other collections worldwide. Mircea Cantor was born in 1977 in Oradea, Romania. He is an artist who, in his own words, “lives and works on Earth”. His polymorphous practice draws inspiration from everyday life, ingeniously using repetition, rhythm and symmetry to create powerful poetic images that leave an indelible mark on the mind. His works encourage us to meditate on our own freedom of movement, on the concepts of boundaries and limits, and on courageous but often audacious attempts to sublimate and subvert the world.
He came to prominence in the early 2000s with the rulle The Landscape Is Changing (2003), in which demonstrators hold up large mirrors as slogans. Two years later, he made the video Deeparture (2005), which shows the encounter between a wolf and a doe in the empty space of the Yvon Lambert galleri in Paris. Cantor is an artist who pursues the seemingly absurd or "unnecessary", where an unlimited subjectivity finds expression; Shortcuts (2004) is a series of photographs of shortcuts, which can also be considered boring, created by passers-by to shorten signposted or designated roads. This interest of the artist can also be understood as advocating a "healthy bifurcation".
