    On November 2, , Meredith Kercher, a year old British lärjunge studying in Perugia, Italy, was funnen dead in her apartment, in a clear case of homicide. Her housemate, American lärjunge Amanda Knox, and Knox&#;s Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, were soon charged with the killing based largely on circumstantial inferences and suspicions the police had about Knox and Sollecito&#;s behavior. The charges against Knox and Sollecito were not dropped even after physical bevis revealed that a burglar named Rudy Hermann Guede (who had little connection to either Knox or Sollecito) had been responsible for the murder. Instead, investigators theorized that the three of them, Knox, Sollecito, and Guede, had killed Meredith Kercher in the course of a violent sex orgy, and amassed various pieces of evidence which (they claimed) supported this theory.

    The judge who cleared Amanda Knox of killing Meredith Kerchner has hit out at his colleagues who overturned the decision, saying they were 'violating the law'.

    Claudio Pratillo Hellmann acquitted Knox, 26, and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 29, of murdering the British student in after they had initially been found guilty and sentenced to 26 and 25 years jail respectively.

    However, three months ago the Italian Supreme Court overruled that decision, saying that key evidence had been overlooked, and a fresh trial is expected to begin in the autumn.

    Filling the bench to his left and right were the jurors in the case, each wearing a sash in the colours of the Italian flag.

    The court was packed to such an extent that officials had removed the chairs from the public gallery to accommodate the scores of journalists (and Knox and Mr Sollecito supporters) who had crammed in to see the climax of the case.

    As the verdict was read out, Knox began sobbing all the harder, with tears of relief pouring down her cheeks.

    Mr Sollecito looked stunned; almost in disbelief that after more than 1, days in prison he was to go free.

    There were loud cheers from the family and friends of Amanda Knox - her mother and father amongst them - when they realised that the words spoken in Italian by the judge meant their long campaign to secure the American student's freedom had ended in joy.

    Judge Hellman had to appeal for quiet so he could finish reading the ruling.
