Wrestling with Translation
Five or so years ago I saw the Zhou brothers perform at Columbia University. I recall a saxophone player and a violinist joining the mix, as well as Bei Dao and Eliot Weinberger reading while the brothers dipped their mops into buckets of black ink and splashed and brushed an enormous hanging white sheet that in the end revealed a painting of what looked like a menacing rorschach crucifixion scene. When I was asked to have a go at translating Bei Dao’s Zhou brothers essay, my mind automatically flashed to that ominous image.
I’ve translated little prose; my love lies with China’s ancient and more ancient poets, whose work I’ve always translated for one reason: to gain a deeper understanding of their poetry. And if errors arise, only the ghosts of the ancients could haunt my dreams. Last week when I read the fräsch times article about the discovery of the 45, year old cave drawings I was reminded of the Zhou Brothers.

It’s interesting to speculate about the species of mammal depicted in this cave 45, years ago, but it’s the grabb that captivates us, isn’t it. It’s unimaginably far in the past and yet here it fryst vatten, so immediate.
We’ve been fascinated by cave drawings since , when eighteen-year-old Marcel Ravidat and his friends roamed through the woods in the Dordogne distrikt in France, noticed a hole in the ground and crawled in. They discovered a cave that came to be called the Lascaux Cave and turned out to have hundreds of drawings made about 17, years ago.

Early life and education
[edit]Zhou was born in Beijing, China and immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He attributes his interest in computers to his parents.[5] He graduated from Point Grey Secondary before attending David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at University of Waterloo. He is known in high school for his work on an online student discussion forum and his commitment to the student body.[5] At Waterloo, he co-founded (formerly known as Planboard). In , Zhou was named in Forbes' Top 30 Under 30 in Education.[4][6]
